Welcome to Bhutan – Scenic Arrival & Acclimatization in Thimphu

  1. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by the Yumka Team, who will escort you on a scenic drive to Thimphu. Enjoy your first views of Bhutan’s pristine landscapes as you journey through river valleys and mountain roads. (Approx. 1.5 hr. Drive/ 50 km)
  1. You will arrive at your hotel for check-in.
  1. After checking in and getting settled, depart for the iconic Buddha Dordenma Statue, one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world, offering breathtaking views of the capital and surrounding valleys.
  1. Eat lunch at a local restaurant in town.
  1. After lunch, visit the Memorial Stupa. The National Memorial Chorten (Stupa) is one of the most important and beloved religious landmarks in Bhutan. Built in 1974 in honor of Bhutan’s Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, it was constructed as a monument to peace, prosperity, and enlightenment rather than as a tomb. Often described as the spiritual heartbeat of Thimphu, the stupa is a place where locals of all ages gather daily to pray, meditate, walk clockwise around the structure, and spin prayer wheels.

Visiting the Memorial Stupa offers a meaningful glimpse into Bhutanese spiritual life. The atmosphere is calm yet vibrant, filled with murmured prayers, butter lamps, and the rhythmic movement of worshippers. It is an ideal place to experience Bhutan’s living Buddhist traditions and reflect in a serene, welcoming environment at the center of the capital city.

  1. Conclude the day with a leisurely walk through Thimphu’s local markets and handicraft shops, where you can browse traditional textiles and crafts, and take the time to acclimatize.
  1. Return to your hotel in the evening for dinner and overnight rest, preparing for the cultural discoveries ahead.

Welcome to Thimphu – Bhutan’s Capital City

Thimphu, Bhutan’s vibrant capital city, sits at an altitude of approximately 2,320 meters (7,620 feet) and offers a unique blend of tradition, spirituality, and modern Bhutanese life. As the only capital city in the world without traffic lights, Thimphu maintains a calm, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere where ancient monasteries, bustling markets, sacred stupas, and government institutions coexist harmoniously. Guests can look forward to scenic viewpoints, traditional arts and crafts, and meaningful cultural encounters — all set against a backdrop of forested hills and flowing rivers.

Your first day in Thimphu is designed to be slow and gentle, allowing guests to acclimatize comfortably to Bhutan’s altitude while easing into the rhythm of travel. We typically begin the journey here rather than in Paro so travelers can adjust gradually before engaging in more physically demanding activities later in the trip.

Why Paro Comes Last

Paro sits slightly lower at approximately 2,280 meters (7,480 feet), but Tiger’s Nest sits at 3,120 meters (10,240 feet), which is much higher. Paro is also home to Bhutan’s only international airport, making it the most practical place to conclude the journey. The valley is known for its fertile rice fields, historic monasteries, and traditional farmhouses, as well as Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, one of the most sacred and iconic pilgrimage sites in the country.

We reserve Paro for the final portion of the trip to help guests feel well-acclimatized and prepared for the hike to Tiger’s Nest. Ending in Paro also ensures a smooth and stress-free departure, allowing guests to enjoy their final moments in Bhutan at a relaxed pace before flying home.

2. Enjoy lunch en route to Paro.

3. Along the way, stop at the scenic Tamcho Bridge, also known as the Iron Bridge, which is a fascinating blend of history, culture, and engineering. Originally built in the 15th century by the legendary Buddhist Saint Thangtong Gyalpo, this iron-chain suspension bridge was part of his mission to connect communities and sacred sites across Bhutan. Using hand-forged iron chains, Thangtong Gyalpo created a marvel of its time that allowed safe passage over the fast-flowing Paro Chhu River and became a vital route for pilgrims and traders.

Though the original bridge was destroyed by flooding in 1969, it was faithfully restored in 2005 using historical chains and traditional designs, preserving its centuries-old charm. Today, visitors can cross the gently swaying bridge, enjoy breathtaking views of the river gorge, and explore the nearby Tachog Lhakhang, a small temple standing guard over the bridge. A stop here offers a unique glimpse into Bhutan’s engineering heritage and spiritual history.

Perched above Rinpung Dzong in a former 17th-century watchtower, the Paro National Museum offers a captivating journey through Bhutan’s history, culture, and identity. Its circular stone structure once defended the valley and now houses an impressive collection of ancient artifacts, religious art, textiles, weapons, stamps, and natural history exhibits that bring Bhutan’s past to life. With panoramic views over Paro Valley and immersive galleries inside, this stop is the perfect introduction to Bhutanese heritage and an exciting cultural highlight for travellers.
